The Branch of the Academy of Science Library at the Institute for Linguistic Studies of the RAS
The Library of the Institute for Linguistic Studies was founded in September 1921 by Academician N.Ya. Marr at the Department of the Russian Language and Literature of the RAS.
Due to the Institute being renamed repeatedly in 1931, 1950, and 1991, the Library has also been known by the following names:
According to the Order N 18 (March 28th, 1979) the Library was attached as a branch to the USSR (Russian) Academy of Science Library. The main Library also includes as a unit the Library of the Department of Lexicography with its library stock amounting to about 22 thousand of volumes. On the whole, the Library of the Institute for Linguistic Studies has accounted for 127 873 books by January 2003.
Topics covered by the Library are as follows: linguistics, general linguistics, languages of the world, psycholinguistics, linguistics of text, and computational linguistics. The following topics are covered selectively: philology, psychology, philosophy, ethnography, and history.
The Library has the honour to host the following collections of books and special library stocks: the Memorial Library of Academician Viktor M. Schirmunsky, the Memorial Library of Professor Solomon D. Katznelson, the Collection of Professor Alexey M. Shadrin, the Collection of Professor Wladimir G. Admoni, the Collection of Professor Milij G. Dolobko, the Memorial Library of the RAS Member Anatolij I. Domashnev, and others.
The Library provides the following reference tools: alphabetical catalogue, classified catalogue, topographical catalogue, card file of the research work done at the Institute for Linguistic Studies, the periodicals card file, and the personalia card file, along with the alphabetical and specialized catalogues of the Department of Lexicography Library.
Since 1999 the electronic catalogue (Hermeneut programme, Linux OS) has been created at the Library. It already includes about 7 thousand of library entries.
